NSF stands for National Sanitation Foundation. If a pvc pipe fitting is NSF rated it means it has passed very strict standards and test procedures and is certified for use in residential or commercial plumbing projects. PVC Schedule 40 is used for cold water pressure systems; mainly irrigation.
